Vacations are the sweetest part of a person’s life. Every student waits for these joyful moments. These days, when youngsters are stressed out, a vacation has become an essential part of his/her healthy growth. Parents who have been toiling along with their children throughout the year heave a sigh of relief.

This valuable time should not be idled away, but turned into a valuable investment in the growth of the youngster. A judicious spending of the vacation can help in rejuvenation, strengthening family bonds and enhancement of social relations. This time can be utilized for acquiring new skills and improving knowledge.

Here’s how you can make your summer vacation a fruitful one.

1. Indulge in physical exercise. Play your favourite game. Enrol in summer camps. This will enhance physical agility as well as mental alertness. Yoga camps are held in different places. The physical director of your school or college can help you to take assistance from the District Sports Authority.

2. Time spent with your grandparents becomes a sweet memory both for you and you grandparents. They will joyfully share with you their stories of the good old days and their life experiences.

3. Go an excursion or a pilgrimage with your family. This will refresh your mind, strengthen family bonds and improve social relations.

4. Visit an orphanage or a home for the destitute to inculcate compassion for the poor and the needy. You will realize how lucky you are and how you should be grateful to God and your parents.

As the sun sizzles, the month of May finds people rushing to the beaches if they live along the coast. Playing in the water and building sandcastles are the usual activities one might think of, but for some beach visitors there are other exciting things to try out. Let’s take a look at those activities that add a fun twist for beachgoers.

Selfies with planes

Hanging out at Maho Beach in Anguilla is not for the faint-hearted. This is because it is very close to Princess Juliana International Airport. Apparently, planes fly up and close here — close enough to take cool selfies with them. Tourists have also found the best time to catch some of the “biggies” flying down from Canada and the United States — between 1 and 4 p.m. For plane lovers, this beach promises hours of entertainment and plenty of cool shots to post on Instagram.

The annual school vacation is a time to rekindle your exhausted enthusiasm and rejuvenate your reduced vitalities. Unfortunately very few of us actually take advantage it. Most of us take the trouble to recharge our batteries. Vacation may be a time to be away from studies but it must not be a time to idle away the precious gift of time. If you invest well during your holidays in creative and productive ways it will certainly pay rich dividends to your life; and the Wright brothers did just that.

Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright, the famously-known Wright brothers, decided to try something different during their school vacations. After several attempts over the years, they finally succeeded in making the world’s first air-controlled and powered flight aircraft at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, USA, on 17 December 1903. It marked the era of aviation. Likewise, many artists, sports personalities and writers have begun their journeys to renown from doing something in their leisure or holiday time.

Your holidays could be a time to explore some creative things that you always wanted to try. You could use this time to explore some new places, to read some books you always wanted to read, try some new hobbies like painting, cooking, knitting, dancing,or learning some musical instruments and thereby discover and develop your hidden talents. Most of these hobbies can greatly increase your self-esteem and enthusiasm in life. Most successful entrepreneurs like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Sundar Pichai recharge their lives by leveraging something they are already very passionate about. It increases the level of success and provides potential to improve their skills.

An excellent way to relax and regain your physical and mental energy is to initiate yourself into yoga and meditation during this vacation. Yoga is an exercise focused on your body’s natural resources for health and self-healing. It is designed to create strength, awareness and harmony within both the body and the mind.
Meditation is a process of training your mind to focus. It helps to reduce stress and to increase concentration. People who do meditation can often remember detailed tasks more accurately and it may even reverse patterns in the brain that contribute to mind-wandering and poor attention. Meditation can also lead to an improved self-image with a more general outlook increasing positive feelings, which then come out in our actions.

Aloe vera has been in use for centuries. The Sanskrit name of aloe vera is Ghikanwar or Ghritkumari. Aloe vera has been very much a part of ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of herbal healing, to treat many ailments. It has also become one of the most important ingredients for skin and hair care.

The plant is a powerful natural moisturizer and seals off loss of moisture. It also softens dead skin cells and helps their removal, leaving the skin smoother and brighter. In fact, it helps the normal functions of the skin by improving its capacity to retain moisture. Aloe vera also has an astringent action and tightens the skin, thus protecting it from early aging. It has shown remarkable results on sun-damaged skin, with its moisturizing, softening, soothing and healing actions. In fact, it can also be used to control acne and helps to heal and minimize acne scars.

Aloe vera has anti-oxidant properties and thus helps boost the skin’s cell renewal process. Therefore, the regular use of products containing aloe vera helps to delay visible ageing signs on the skin. It is ideal for general cosmetic care, too, and is added to skin care products and lotions, like cleanser, moisturisers, serums, gels, masks and so on.

Aloe Vera can also be used in home care if the plant is available at home. The aloe gel or juice may be applied directly on the skin. The gel obtained from the plant itself is the leaf pulp and is found in the inner portion of the leaves. The aloe juice is found just beneath the outer skin of the leaves. However, while using it directly on the skin at home, one should wash the plant well and observe total hygiene.

The aloe vera gel or juice may be applied on the face daily and then washed off with plain water after 20 minutes. It helps to soften and moisturize the skin. In fact, used regularly, it helps to restore the skin’s youthful properties.

Applying aloe vera is useful during winter and summer. In winter, it helps to relieve dryness and maintain the soft texture of the skin. In summer, it soothes the skin especially after sun exposure as it soothes the skin in cases of sun damage or sun burn. It also moisturizes the skin without making the skin oily.

With the summer heat on our necks, we all need something to keep us cool, comfortable and protected. The sun shines too bright in summer and it’s important to protect yourself from the heat, but hey, fashion is important, too! So, here’s that one item you must have in your wardrobe to help you with your summer style — scarves! I know what you’re thinking… scarves in summer? No way! Yes, way!

As much as we’d like our dose of vitamin D, our skin also needs some care and sunblock creams can only do so much. You need to keep your heads covered and your arms, too. A scarf makes a good layer as well as a good accessory for the summer. You can use your scarf to cover your head and arms when you feel the heat and you can style it along with your outfit when you’re indoors. But summer scarves mean you need to pick your fabrics carefully and style it well.

Here are a few tips for you to pick the right fabric and show off your killer summer style!

Fabric choices

Chiffon
It’s a very breathable fabric and dries really quickly. It absorbs moisture and is an extremely elegant fabric. It also ensures airflow and does not overwhelm you with heat. It’s one of the best fabrics you can invest in.

Cotton
The most recommended fabric for summers. It’s breathable and keeps you cool. It’s affordable, comfortable and absorbs moisture. It dries quickly and can be washed in the washing machine. It’s a very durable fabric to invest in.

Wrapping styles

Models wearing scarves as a bandana, headband and ponytail tie

Headband/Hair tie
Summer means sun on your head. A headband keeps your head covered and keeps you looking chic all the time. Want to be a trendsetter? Use your scarf as a headband. YouTube and Pinterest will teach you many ways to tie a scarf headband. You can also choose a slightly retro look by using your scarf as a hair tie.

Male and female wearing scarves the classic way

Classic Wrap
It’s the same old way of wrapping your scarf. Boys, you can wrap the scarf in this way and wear it over a tee or on a shirt for that matter. A guy with a scarf is a rare sight, but hey, you need the scarf to protect you, too!

Summer holidays are at our doorsteps, once again. I’m sure many of you have already booked your tickets for the long or short term trips you have been planning for months, and are busy packing your bags, etc. for these long-awaited trips.

Some of us will visit our grandparents and larger families in other cities or towns where rare fruits, refreshing rains, the lush green expanse, the aroma of the wet Earth and the swaying branches and the dancing lilies await you.

Are you among those whose bags are packed or amongst those who will have to think of ways to enjoy the spell of summer at home?

Whether or not we have some place to go and enjoy, and whether or not we are compelled to be at some place or not — every scene, every situation offers a choice, though. Therein lies the beauty of life. We may not have a choice regarding spending the summers at home, but we have a choice in terms of what we do while we are home. We can fret and fume; sigh and slow down. Or, we can make it an action-packed and joyous summer, with some visible signs of blooming in the process.

For the parents, these months can be those rare and precious time-with-kids months. The kids do not have to go to school; there is no homework and pressure of performance. Parents have hectic schedules and are busy throughout the year. Now is the time to talk to children, as they are at home. And, most important — you have time to listen to them. You can be the vacation-teacher and counsellor, this summer and teach them the values, history and culture of India, while also listening to their woes.

And, for all the growing kids?

Well, all those indoor games must certainly be waiting to come out of the drawers. When was the last time you had a carom duel with your sibling or friend? Or perhaps a friendly badminton match? Over popcorn and lemonade, we can play scrabble at home or teach our younger brothers and sisters a few moves of chess or laugh out loud as a snake bites you and you fall off the ladder on the board! There are cards and Antakshari for spicing up the evenings, and bedtime stories and sky-gazing for the night, too. All those capitals and currencies you wanted to learn about and all those dusty pages of the encyclopaedia which you have always wanted to take a look at — you can do it, this summer. Story books and comics can be purchased, borrowed from friends or rented out from the few libraries nearby. The entire family can have happy-cooking-hours, with everybody jostling for space in the kitchen and together dishing out some creatively conceived delicacies.

This summer, lose the western wear and pick out some nice and cool Indian wear! All you need is the right material and design. I know Indian clothes can sometimes be a hassle but they can be summer-friendly, too. You just need to know the right patterns and materials. Pick flowy designs and organic summer friendly material. Go for cotton, khadi, muslin, crepe, etc. Flowy patterns allow air in and keep you away from all the heat. Avoid synthetic clothes and black and other dark colours because they absorb more heat. Wearing synthetic material also affects your skin. So prep up for the crazy summers with the right clothes… and some sunscreen!

1. Long skirts

Nice, bright, summery long skirts are great for a summer day. Pick the ones made of cotton and avoid anything synthetic. It might seem like too much trouble but they keep your legs covered and protect them from the heat and sunlight. They also look cute and elegant. Buy printed and colourful long skirts and pair them with basic tops or short kurtis. Try and choose full-sleeved tops, preferably fitted ones in a soft and summery material. You can also wear a tank top and add a cropped jacket. Don’t forget to accessorize.

2. Salwar kameez

Cotton salwar kameezes with Lucknowi chikan work are popular during summers because they look very elegant, while the material keeps you comfortable. If you get one stitched, make sure it’s a loose fit. You can skip the dupatta and be hassle free! These chikan suits look pretty cute and are the kind that you will simply fall in love with. You can also get cotton suits stitched. Avoid any material that requires you to wear an undershirt.

Guys, I know you feel the heat, too, and you cannot wear Indian clothes all the time so here’s a list of what you can wear and mix and match. Remember, you need to pick the right material. Make the wrong choice and you will be stuck in the hot and sweaty summer. So, here’s what you can wear.

1. Polo shirts

Good quality polo shirts in all the right colours are all you need. You can pick pinks and whites and blues. The pastel colours are the perfect pick for summers. You can pair them with chinos or shorts. They look classy and casual.

2. Shorts

You can wear cargo, denim, flat-front, three fourths, whatever you like and feel the most comfortable in. Pair shorts with a polo shirt or t-shirt or white shirt.

The summer holidays will soon be here and we know you have been waiting for them. After months of hard work, classes, books and tests, the fun time of the year has arrived and you should rejoice. After all, you truly deserve every bit of it. But I have a few ideas to share and this will add on to the fun of the holidays. I’ll help you add a creative touch to your vacation and explore options on things to do while you laze around in the sun. Whether it means exploring your artistic side, connecting with Mother Nature or simply making memories while travelling, we have it all covered here for you. So let’s begin.

Time to enhance your passion

When I was young, I was often asked what I wanted to be when I grew up and I would always say, “Air hostess”. I would run to the kitchen and get a tray with food to enact being one. As I grew older, my dreams evolved and so did my ambitions. But one thing that did not change along the way was to experiment with what I think my passion is. I would want you to try out your passion. If you like to sing, pick up that microphone. If you like to dance, turn on the music. If you like to paint, the canvas is all yours. After all, the world is your oyster and you can think and be whatever you dream of. But if you want to begin, this is the perfect time since you are free to explore anything and everything.

Earn while you learn

I believe the most treasured memory for a person is how you save money when you are young or how your parents teach you the value of money with limited pocket-money every month. But there are many other ways to earn and guess what, you can learn a lot in the process.
Garage sale: Did you know that the biggest companies like Apple, Microsoft, Disney and even Google were founded in a garage? It just tells us a lot about how people start small and do exceptional work through their lives. All you need is some free space and an open mind to begin with.

Personalized mug

Consider getting about 5 to 7 friends on board for this and start a small garage sale with all the things that you can sell. From toys to old books, clothes, anything saleable is your product for the day. One of you can handle the finances, the other can handle the marketing of the idea and the rest can handle the merchandise. It will not only teach you handy tips on money management but it will be a fun way to learn the many aspects of business in a practical way. Who knows if the business tycoon of tomorrow is sitting right there with you?

Gifting solutions: If you like making personalized gifts, then this will work for you. From gift boxes to customized calendars or mugs, today people will pay for new and creative ideas. If you think you can do it, all you need to do is tell your family and friends about this venture and spread the word. It will be a great platform to begin with and you will put your passion to profession in no time as you grow older.

APRIL 2016 TOPIC: What is the most memorable book you have read and why?

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is my most favoured book at present. Green’s eccentric use of words and phrases held me captive till the very end. This is not a “sappy sob story” as one may expect but a brilliant novelization of life, love and death. I fell in deep adoration with the protagonists, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, so much so that I started wondering about their lives after the end of the book and the very thought of them being fictitious scarred me emotionally. Phrases like ‘pain demands to be felt’ and ‘oblivion is inevitable’ left me in awe of how realistic this work of ‘fiction’ is. I never would have thought that a 313 page novel could revolutionize my thought processes to such an unfathomable extent. This book will remain etched in my heart forever.

The most memorable book I have read is The Language Of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. The book is based on spreading the message of love through flowers and plants. The story centres around an orphan, Victoria, and how misunderstandings made her life come to a standstill but also how love, understanding and trust can put the missing pieces of the puzzle together. The book is filled with tough yet tender moments of loss, regret and redemption, but above all, with second chances and happy outcomes.

The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma is a wonderfully crafted fable on a life-changing odyssey to an ancient culture. This kind of a novel adds essence to our life and gives us direction, especially during hard times. It helps us become aware of the mortality of humans and how each day counts, in fact, each moment and each thought. Above all, it gives us the answer to questions like: What is the purpose of life? How can we attain happiness?

The most memorable book I’ve ever read is The Book Thief by Markus Zukas, a German writer, who portrays the struggle of a twelve-year-old communist girl in the Hitler era, as she loses all her loved ones as a repercussion of the Second World War. Narrated by Death, we are told that amidst these crises, she is taught to read and write by her German foster father, making her set out to steal books in order to quench her thirst for reading, thereby being named by her childhood friend and teen crush Rudy, as ‘the book thief’. As the Nazis’ activities continue the book makes one wonder how even after losing all, humans learn to survive. It makes Death exclaim, “I am haunted by humans.”

“Be active! Take on responsibility! Work for the things you believe in. If you do not, you are surrendering your fate to others.” — Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Dr Kalam is known for his zeal-provoking speeches and books, especially his autobiography Wings of Fire, a magnificently motivational work. Every word, emotional implication and the realistic plot contained in the book clarify convincingly, how a middle-class boy might have struggled to go from being a newspaper distributor to being the President of India. Wings Of Fire proves invaluable to make me keep my faith in the Almighty and work to the best of my abilities.

The Story Of My Life by Helen Keller is one of my favourites because it shows us the meaning of love. Young Helen, who was deaf and blind, understood the meaning of love from her greatest motivator — her teacher, Anne Sullivan. She said that love does not mean to see the good things but love comes through actions and it only needs to be felt in your heart.

The book which filled my heart with genuine happiness is the Japanese bestseller Totto Chan. If the innocent laughing of a child captures your attention or if you are a person who cherishes your past school memories with lots of love, I am cent per cent sure that you will wholeheartedly appreciate this book written by former UNICEF goodwill ambassador Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. Each sentence of the book reveals the innocent view of a little heart about her school days. It provides many thought-provoking insights which have the unbelievable power to transform the present-day school system.

The books that struck a chord in my heart were always the ones that I read beyond syllabus and prescribed readings of curriculum. The most memorable book that I ever read is The Powers Of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr Joseph Murphy, a wonderful self-help book that deals with proven, practical techniques to master your mind and unleash your hidden potential. Over the years, I grew up with the book and it has been my perfect companion. Lord Bacon famously said: “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested”. Dr Murphy’s book is really worth assimilating into your blood.

When it comes to books, I have a long list of favourites. But out of all I found Making India Awesome by Chetan Bhagat the best. It is a book of essays in which he analyzes and provides inspired solutions to the country’s most intractable problems — poverty, unemployment, corruption, violence against women, communal violence, religious fundamentalism, illiteracy and more. The main reason to grade this book as best, is that it will help you understand the most complex of problems facing the nation today and gives practical solutions on how you can do your part to solve them.

Remember Me? is the story about a woman who loses her memory of the last three years and now remembers nothing about her multimillionaire husband and a life which is next to perfect. What if you woke up and everything seems to be magically perfect? I can feel myself experiencing excitement as well as fear. Excitement for being able to live a new life all together, fear for having forgotten all my happy and joyous moments with people whom I love. Losing your memory and then coping with it is a tough job which I realized after reading this book. It is the most memorable one for me because I was able to feel the pain, the anger and the confusion of forgetting everything and waking up to a life which you never thought you could live.
Moksha SharmaMoksha Sharma (17)

The most memorable book that I have read is The Client by John Grisham. This book literally takes you to the streets of New Orleans and Memphis. Each character is sketched with such intensity and the plot is so gripping that you will never let go off the book. It is about an 11-year-old boy who is mentally and physically tormented in his futile pursuit to think like a wise adult, and pathetically caught between bloodthirsty criminals and the very demanding legal system of America. It focuses the spotlight on single parenthood, the life of not-so-wealthy citizens and the suffocating law.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is special to me because it taught me the essential wisdom of listening to my heart. I learned to read the omens strewn along life’s path and above all to follow my dreams. I read the book four years back, I still have it and can never part with it because it has great emotional and intellectual significance for me.

The memorable book I’ve read is 5 Points Someone by Chetan Bhagat. It deals with the lives of three friends whose elation on making it to one of the best engineering colleges in India is quickly deflated by the rigour and monotony of the academic work. Most of the book deals with the numerous attempts by the trio to cope with and/or beat the system as well as one of the friends’ fling with the daughter of the domineering head of the mechanical engineering department. While the tone of the novel is humorous, it takes some dark turns every now and then, especially when it comes to the families of the protagonists. Most of the action takes place inside the campus with the boys frequently lamenting how the internationally lauded IIT system has stifled their creativity by forcing them to value grades more than anything else.

I’ve read many books till date, but the one that remains etched in my mind is Malala Yousafzai’s autobiography I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood for Education and Was Shot by The Taliban. It made me realize that nothing in life is impossible to achieve. It enlightens us not by silence but by initiating constructive dialogue, education and affirmation of human rights, and tells us how violence and discrimination can be ended.

Last month I discovered a Louis Sacher book called Holes which is a page-turner that shows Sacher’s profound storytelling mastery. A juvenile boy Stanley, who is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, is sent to a camp which is said to be healthy for kids. But as it turns out, all that the kids are supposed to do is dig holes! The story revolves around Stanley’s ancestry, his friendship and the question as to why the digging of holes? The book takes you on a journey of friendship, hard work and courage.

The Harry Potter series is more than a memorable book for me because it’s been a part of my life (and Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville… my best friends!). It helped me understand my childhood and teenage years a lot better. I can never refer to it as just the story of The Boy Who Lived; for me it’s an epic that taught me the power of love, sacrifice and friendship. J. K. Rowling has beautifully woven the story and created a world every child (or even adults) would love to belong to. Every time I feel low I pick up any of the Harry Potter books and start reading, all my tension and worries just vanish. That’s the impact the series has on me. If I continue to jot down all my thoughts on the series it will end up being like Hermione’s homework: 400 pages!

The unforgettable book which had an unwavering impact on my life is The Secret To Teen Power. Earlier I did not consider reading is important to me but now it is the heart and soul of my life. This is the book which changed my attitude and the way I think. The book proposes that whatever you think about you bring about; the law of attraction signifies ‘ask, believe and receive’ which is a powerful process for accomplishing your aspirations. It appeals to create thoughts of hope and optimism.

Those who read books live 100 lives before they die, because they imagine themselves in the place of the characters in the books. One of my favourite books is If It’s Not Forever It’s Not Love by Durjoy Dutta. He beautifully explains exactly what love, caring and loyalty are. Nowadays many teens take love as a game; these teens should read this touching and memorable story to learn what true love is.

The most memorable book that I’ve read is Life Is What You Make It by Preeti Shenoy. This book doesn’t just tell the story about a young girl and how she finds her way but it’s about almost every single person in this world who has at some time or the other felt lost or hopeless and has decided to give up. The story is so realistic and that’s what makes it a great read. From beginning to end, I see just one word — HOPE. As the title itself gives an impression of open-ended possibilities, the book justifiably made it so memorable for me.

The first novel I read, I Too Had A Love Story by Sir Ravinder Singh, created a deep impact on me. It made me cry, it made me feel super active when the lovers were on the verge of meeting each other and lastly it allowed me to grow up. But most importantly it helped my senses to work and to understand that whatever you see in movies does not resemble reality. That is simply reel life, not the real one. That was the day when I grew up and accepted the fact that life does not stop due to the presence or absence of anyone, instead it runs and runs in a better and dignified way making you stronger and stronger.
