Preparing for a career as a makeup artist requires a combination of technical knowledge, hands-on experience, and interpersonal skills. The scope is vast, and with dedication and continuous learning, you can turn your passion for makeup into a thriving and rewarding career.

What’s this career about?

Makeup artists are no longer people who run a beauty parlour. Nowadays, the makeup industry is a major industry. There are several different types of makeup artists, each with their own specialties and areas of expertise. Here are some of the most common types of makeup artists:

Makeup artists in the beauty and cosmetic industry work with brands, cosmetic companies and beauty salons to provide makeup services and promote products.
Bridal makeup artists focus on creating beautiful and long-lasting looks for brides, and members of the bridal party.

Fashion makeup artists specialize in creating makeup looks for fashion shows, runway presentations, and editorial photoshoots. These artists may also be involved in product development, testing and advising on trends. This career option requires a strong understanding of products, techniques and the ability to connect with customers. They may work as brand ambassadors, conducting makeup demonstrations, providing education and training and creating makeup looks to showcase the brand’s products.

What’s fab today wasn’t always so a few centuries ago. Who would have thought that stuffing up your arms for a stouter look would have been a fashionable thing to do? This month, we look at ‘bombasting’ and other styles that were fads back then.

Wig wear

It is believed that wigs became fashionable in society after King Louis XIV and Charles II of England decided to wear them. They wore it to hide their baldness but that didn’t stop other members of court from wearing wigs. The price of a wig ranged from 25 to 800 shillings. White-haired wigs were the most popular of all. Some elaborate wigs were up to four feet in height! Not surprisingly, wig-makers did brisk business and offered a host of services ranging from custom-designing to periodic cleaning, repair, powdering and scenting wigs.

A creative director in fashion at work

I am 15 years old and want to become a Creative Director in Fashion or a fashion stylist/editor. Which stream should I opt for in Class XI? If Humanities, then what subjects are preferable? Kindly guide me also about undergraduate programmes.
Kejhal Kalra

Creative directors in the fashion industry may be known as an art director for a high-fashion magazine; or a creative director of a fashion design company overseeing the design of apparel. No matter the format in which they work, creative directors in the fashion industry use their skills of creativity in exercising concepts, communication, leadership and industry-related technology. They are expected to keep up with fashion trends and developments to produce trendy outfits for your department store or magazine. In short, a Creative Director’s job is to reinforce or recreate the brand aesthetic.

It is not an area where you can become a creative director just after doing a particular course. First you have to work as a copywriter, designer, art director or do a similar creative job, and show an aptitude not only for the creative side, but for the business side of advertising and marketing. On an average, you would need about 5-8 years of experience in a senior or management position in order to be considered for a creative director position. To become a copywriter you need a degree in Mass Communication. To become a designer, go for a Bachelor’s in Fashion Designing. For both these courses, eligibility is 10+2 with any stream.
