What is the scope for a B.Sc. in Biochemistry? Do I require Maths in Std XII for this?
Naina (15) / Pune

Biochemistry is a laboratory-based science that combines biology and chemistry. It explores the chemical processes within and related to living organisms. It focuses on what’s happening inside our cells, studying components like proteins, lipids and organelles.

To pursue a career in this field, you should start with a B.Sc. in Biochemistry. Eligibility is 10+2 with Chemistry and Biology. Mathematics is not necessary. A bachelor’s degree is sufficient for advanced technician jobs, lab/research assistant positions, or testing and inspection jobs. An advanced degree is required for most other positions in the scientific field, for example, for jobs in management, sales, inspection, service, and some in applied research. A Ph.D. degree is needed for college teaching, independent research, and advancement to administrative positions.

I am a 12th grade student. I am passionate about biology, and I am good at public speaking. I am planning to pursue biotechnology, but due to several reasons, I am not sure about that. I need your guidance in choosing a good career. Should I continue with biology or do I need to shift to computer science?
Fazila Sithik (17) / Kendriya Vidyalaya, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu

Ask yourself: Do you have good scientific investigation and problem-solving skills? Are you willing to do lot of reading, required to keep abreast of new developments and discoveries? Do you like Biology and Chemistry? If your answer is yes, then go for it.

Biotechnology is undoubtedly the future. Companies are investing heavily in research of new drugs and biological products, so this field is rapidly growing and offering wonderful opportunities. Even many state governments are setting up biotechnology parks. There are plenty of overseas opportunities for Indian students in countries like Canada, the US and other European countries.

You’ll need a Bachelor’s in Biotechnology, a 4-year course, for which eligibility is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Agriculture. Later go for M.Sc./MBA (Biotechnology).

I am a student of Std X. I am interested in doing further studies after Std X with Biology, but I don’t want to enter the medical line. In which field could I set my career?
Rishita Bansal / Jeevan Marg Sophia Sec. School, Deoria

Besides the medical field, a study in Biology provides a foundation for various other careers like pharmacist, physical and occupational therapist, medical technologist, college professor and administrator, research scientist, agriculturist, nutritionist, and bio-medical engineer. A growing emphasis on environmental preservation is creating another career path for biologists: conservation, wildlife study and occupational safety.

Large industries that deliver healthcare products seek Biology graduates for manufacturing, marketing and sales positions. With an advanced degree, you may work in management or administration, plan programmes for food and drug testing, direct activities at zoos or botanical gardens or go for applied research. If you have an interest in computers, you may go for Bioinformatics, a field which promises to change the way we diagnose and treat diseases and provide healthcare.

I am a student of B.Sc. final year with Biology. I want to know what career I can choose after my graduation for a good salary package or should I pursue my M.Sc. degree? If M.Sc., then from which college in Uttar Pradesh should I do so?
Avantika / Gorakhpur

A bachelor’s degree in one of the fields of biology is sufficient for advanced technician jobs in the medical field, lab/research assistant positions, or testing and inspection jobs. You’ll work as part of a big project team. Large industries that deliver health care products seek biology graduates for manufacturing, marketing and sales positions.

But for other positions in the scientific field, for example, jobs in management, sales, inspection, service, and some in applied research, you need to have an advanced degree. You may be involved in planning and administering programmes for testing food and drugs or directing activities at zoos or botanical gardens. You may test and inspect foods, drugs, and other products or write for technical publications. After a few years of experience, you may work as a consultant to business firms or to the government. A Ph.D. is needed for college teaching, independent research, and for advancement to administrative positions.

In order to have good career prospects, you should go for a post-graduate degree. Almost all universities offer M.Sc. If you have an interest in Computers, you can also go for Bioinfomatics, a field that promises to change the way we diagnose and treat diseases and provide healthcare. This is a relatively new discipline where huge discoveries are being made and are waiting to be made.

I am a class 12 student with PCB as my subjects. I am preparing for MH-CET entrance but would like to know other career options for this line as well. And a few study and concentration tips, too.

After 10+2 with PCB, you can go for various healthcare careers like physicians, pharmacists, therapists, nursing and medical technologists. But besides these, there are several other general career areas for biologists. The growing emphasis on environmental preservation is creating another career path for biologists: conservation, wildlife study and occupational safety. Those having an interest in computers can also go for Bioinformatics, a field that promises to change the way we diagnose and treat diseases and provide healthcare.

To increase your concentration, the first thing is to switch your phone off or put it in another room! Don’t consume too much tea or coffee. These have caffeine that gives you more strength for some time but soon leaves you sluggish. Speak out loud instead of simply reading. Drawing diagrams will help you to visualize information which would be hard to describe. This creates a visual memory in your mind which can be recalled in an exam.

For better productivity, take a short break after every 45-50 minutes of study as your focus and concentration will become impaired after this period. Lastly, make sure to get adequate rest and sleep well. When you sleep, your brain assimilates the information you have learned when studying, so getting a good night’s sleep will help you remember those pesky maths formulas you need for your exam!

I am in Std VIII. I want to make a career in bio-medical engineering. Which courses should I take after Std X? Please suggest some good colleges in Mumbai.
Daniah Shaikh/ Mary Immaculate Girls High School, Kalina

Biomedical engineers utilize the customary engineering methods and theories to examine and resolve problems in biology and medicine, and thereby provide a complete enhancement of health care. X-ray machines, pacemakers, drug infusion pumps, artificial organs, medical implants: these are all creations of biomedical engineers. They sometimes do research on how to best design computer software and electric circuits meant to be used for medical purposes.

For admission to a bachelor’s degree, the candidate must pass 10+2 with a science subject such as biology, maths and chemistry. Some of the institutes in Mumbai are Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College Of Engineering (djscoe.org); Watumull Institute of Electronics Engineering and Computer Technology (watumull.edu/home); Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (tsec.edu) and Vidyalankar Institute of Technology (vit.edu.in).
