A picture is worth 1000 words…and the wait!

Did you know that a patent for the first photo booth dates back to 1888? The next year, the photo booth was exhibited at the Paris World Fair. Though it was unreliable and couldn’t be operated without manual intervention, the photo booth created a sensation! It was coin-operated and it took about 5 minutes for the photo to develop. In 1925, a photo booth, closely similar to modern-day ones, came into existence in New York thanks to the efforts of inventor Anatol Josepho. Each photo cost 25 cents and produced 8 photos in 8 minutes. Photo booths were extremely popular until the 1960s when Polaroid cameras grabbed people’s attention and threw down the shutter on photo booths.

‘Third Eye’, an exhibition of 31 photographs taken by the young and budding photographer Saamya Patel, was held at the Piramal Art Gallery, Mumbai, over the weekend of 23 and 24 September 2023.

From the 31 photos, 26 were shot on a Canon 90D and 5 on an iPhone, says the 17-year-old Mumbaiite. So what is the ‘Third Eye’? we quiz her. “I had selected 31 photographs out of over 500 photos I’ve shot over the years. When selecting the photographs, I kept the theme of my exhibition in mind — The Third Eye, where all the photos had been shot with a unique perspective and had a focal point that perhaps the common eye would overlook.”

The captions on each of the photographs in the exhibition were based on Patel’s various travels within India, the U.S. and Iceland. “I have been fortunate to have travelled to and explored unique places with an abundance of natural beauty. My last two excursions were to the national parks in the U.S. and Iceland. The ruggedness and untouched beauty of these areas gave it a magical feel, which is what I have attempted to capture in my photographs”.

A picture speaks more than a thousand words. This is an old phrase that has immense truth in it. An image is not a mere frame or composition, but a reality. Today, people are crazy about taking photographs and want to share them instantly on Facebook Stories, Instagram Reels or WhatsApp Status. When we take an image, we also capture the reality which turns into a historical reality in the future. Thus, every image can create history.

All of us are potential photographers; the art of photography is innate in each one of us. We need to bring out that talent and move towards potential photography to become professional photographers. It becomes a reality when we keep practising. In this article, I would like to share my experience as a mobile photographer (pocket filmmaker) on how you can capture a realistic photograph.

How to handle a smartphone camera

1. Clean the camera lens properly so that the image is clear.

2. Focus properly, because the clarity of the image depends on your focus.

3. Keep your hands steady so that motion blur can be avoided.
