If you’re looking for a movie that will have you laughing until you’re doubled over, then Madgaon Express, directed by Kunal Khemu, is a must-watch!

Three childhood friends, Dodo, Pinku, and Ayush, set out for a fun-filled vacation to Goa, only to find themselves entangled in chaos when they mistakenly switch bags with a dangerous drug dealer. From encounters with eccentric gangsters to navigating police pursuits, the trio goes through a series of hilarious predicaments, showcasing their camaraderie amidst the madness.

Divyenndu’s portrayal of Dodo adds levity with his comedic timing, complemented by Pratik Gandhi and Avinash Tiwary’s charismatic performances as Pinku and Ayush, respectively. The writing delivers punchy humour while the direction keeps the pace brisk, ensuring non-stop entertainment.

Madgaon Express is highly recommended for its blend of laughter, adventure and friendship, offering a refreshing take on the classic buddy comedy genre.

Goan rapper, hip-hop artist, producer and singer-songwriter, Nathan Joseph Mendes aka Tsumyoki, can’t believe how his life has changed after winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Indian Local Act in November last year, beating the likes of Divine, Mali, When Chai Met Toast and Dee MC. He won the award for his song It’s Alright featuring Prophet Joegus. It would have been a proud moment for Tsumyoki to be at the 2023 MTV EMAs on 5th November in Paris, France, but due to the Israel-Hamas war, the event was cancelled.

From White Tee in 2019 to Daboij in 2021, an album from which the single Jackets made waves and got a great response from his growing fan base, to 2021 with his debut EP Way Too Messy, it is apparent that Tsumyoki (pronounced sue-ma-yoki), or simply Yoki, is an artist who is manifesting good music. Apart from his solo music, Tsumyoki is also one of the founding members of Goa Trap Culture (GTC) or GTC Crew. The band, best known for the album Daboij, includes artists Elttwo, 2jaym and Kidd Mange.

In June 2023, the 22-year-old released his fourth project A Message from The Moon. Tsumyoki was featured on Goan Insider’s 50 Most Influential People list two years ago. The Margao lad, who also plays the piano, guitar and ukulele, has been performing all over the country and has made a name for himself on the music circuit, gaining fans wherever he goes.

VERUS FERREIRA spoke with Tsumyoki about his new album, A Message From The Moon, and his musical journey.

How does it feel to win an MTV EMA?
It’s an indescribable feeling and a sign that my hard work is paying off. My mom started crying, and the fact that I was able to make her so proud of me will be one of my greatest achievements. It feels really good.

What qualities do you think put you on the top of other Indian rappers/hip-hop artists and made you what you are today?
My sound is very different and I’m very versatile. I go to very different genres and don’t hold myself back with regards to anything.

I am studying in Class 8. A few months ago I fell in love with the sport of hockey and ever since then it is my dream to learn hockey and, if possible, pursue it as my career. However, in Goa hockey is probably the least-known game and therefore I can’t learn the sport. There don’t seem to be any classes anywhere in Goa for hockey. I am ready to do anything to learn this sport. Please guide me as to what to do to learn this sport with the aim of possibly pursuing it as a career.

Check out Goans Hockey (goanshockey.com), which has been promoting the sport of hockey through regular hockey camps and tournaments. The association has been commended by the Sports Authority of Goa for conducting the state championships district-wise for all categories, i.e., junior men and women and sub-junior boys and girls. Some other clubs are Vasco Sports Club, Vasco, Goa and Tilak Maidan Sports Club, Vasco-da-Gama, Goa.

If you did not know what ‘upcycling’ was before, then you are just like me. Let me tell you a little about it. While traditional recycling needs to infact increase, there are many items that cannot easily be recycled. These items go into landfills and keep piling up, not adding any value to us. Recycling takes the object back to its raw form and is used in its original manner. With ‘upcycling’ one can take waste items and make them more beautiful and valuable.

Ask Patricia Pinto who started her journey with garbage way back in 1995. While she started recycling for the city of Panjim, Goa, there were a lot of items that could not be recycled. Wanting to ensure they do not end up in landfills, she took inspiration from what people were doing on the internet and decided to make something from these waste items. She used discarded ceramic, porcelain, melamine, thermocol and fabric from Panjim’s dry waste sorting centre to create beautiful art objects and products to use around the house. Truly good upcycling is an art form and not just junk that has been spruced up! Do read her story.

How did you take up the cause of upcycling or creating wealth out of waste?
I love the “garbage” topic and can talk “trash” for hours on end and have been doing so as far back as 1995. As an elected Councillor to the Corporation of the city of Panjim in the year 2000, I was directly involved in the issue. We started segregation of waste into wet and dry at the source itself. But this did not seem to be the solution. I insisted that dry waste be segregated into four parts at the household and hotel level. The four parts being plastic, paper, metal/glass and non-recyclables. While all these four can be recycled or treated, it was the ceramic, porcelain, melamine and earthenware that would eventually have to be landfilled. Land, as you know, is scarce in Goa, so there had to be some other way to treat these items and that’s what I do, “Upcycle those items that are tough to recycle”.

What is the garbage situation in Goa like?
I don’t want to sound alarming. But “pathetic” is putting it mildly. Every village and every city is reeling over the garbage issue. The newspapers are full of articles or news on it. People genuinely want to do something about it. Several civic groups are chipping in, cleaning roads, water bodies, beaches etc. But sadly the authorities just seem to be oblivious to the fact that we are actually sitting on a garbage time bomb.

What are some of the solutions to the garbage situation overall as all cities have the problem of garbage?
The solution to this problem cannot be one-sided. The authorities and the people have to work on this together. I have a lot of faith in the people and they will do what they are told to do. But they need to believe that the authorities are genuine about what they tell them to do. For example, people will take the trouble to segregate their waste. But if the waste collectors pick up the segregated waste and dump it together in the waste truck, in one stroke, they have broken the confidence that people had in them. And this is exactly what is happening. An entire system needs to be put in place, i.e., segregation at source, collection and final treatment of the waste. There can be no half measures.

I’m currently studying in Std XII Arts stream. I would like to undergo full-fledged training in nursing after my HSSC Boards. I don’t want to do ANM or GNM. Please tell me which institutes in Goa and other states in India offer training in nursing after Std XII (Arts).
Karina Sequeira / Goa

If you want to do nursing, there are three options: one year ANM, three year GNM and four year B,Sc. Nursing. Eligibility for ANM and GNM is 10+2 in any stream, though science background is preferred. But for B.Sc., one must have PCB in 10+2. Many hospitals and institutes all over India offer GNM.

Rachana Kamat, 2018 South Goa District SSC topper

Congratulations, Rachana! You have done all us, your family, your school and all your well wishers proud. THE TEENAGER TODAY, too, is really proud of you. Tell us something about yourself, your parents and siblings.
Ours is a small family, composed of my “papa” (father), mother and my brother who is five years younger to me. My father, Naguesh Kamat, is a tax consultant, and a senior LIC Agent. My mother, Namrata Kamat, too, works as an LIC Agent.

Has the news of your topping the list of rank-holders in Goa Board come as a surprise you?
To be frank, no! The news did not surprise me at all! From the beginning of the academic year, this was my goal: to top the Goa Board. I missed it just by four marks. I am happy and excited that I topped the South Goa district, and also secured the second rank in the State.

Would you mind sharing with us your secret of success?
Yes, happily! Right from the start of the academic year my focus was on my studies, and on the goal that I had set before me of becoming the topper!

From the day I entered Std X, our TV was switched off permanently. On my part, I kept social media completely out. Of course, like any other teenager, I too had “teenage distractions” coming my way. But for one year, I decided to keep them all away. Today, I am happy that I did that. During my study leave, I dedicated at least eight hours daily for personal study, and my tuition classes… it was not learning the lessons by heart, but doing it analytically.

What role did your parents and the family play in your achievement?
They were with me all the way, supporting me in all possible ways. My dream of becoming the top ranker was their dream, as well. Whenever they saw me losing heart, or becoming downcast, or feeling lonely, they were there at my side strengthening me and motivating me. At the beginning of the year, my father wrote on a piece of paper “No. 1” and brought it to my room. I pasted it on the wall of my room, and it is still there. This was a big morale booster! My younger brother, who is hardly 10, too co-operated with me by not distracting me in any way. He never even entered my room when I was studying. I have dedicated my success to him!

What about your school and your teachers?
They were most supportive, all the way, encouraging me all the time. All of them kept telling me that I am capable of making my dream come true. Also my tuition teachers helped me a lot. They were ready to spend any amount of time for me, even keeping aside their personal works. My school was second home for me.

Who are your role models in life?
Other than my parents who are my first role models, I look up to Dr Abdul Kalam, our former President, and Swami Vivekananda as my role models in life. Dr Kalam’s book Wings of Fire has considerably influenced my thinking; also spiritual thoughts and wise sayings of Swami Vivekanada have been a great source of inspiration and strength to me.

Do you have other past times or hobbies other than studies?
Yes, I love to play badminton, and whenever I can spare time in the evenings, I do play badminton. I am also interested in reading and writing. I have also contributed some articles to our school magazine. Given the opportunity, I am willing to write for THE TEENAGER TODAY, as well.

What are your future plans?
As of now, I have joined Shree Damodar Higher Secondary School for my XIth Std. My aim is to be a cardiac specialist, and I am attending some coaching classes in view of that.

A final question… Are you proud of being born a girl and not a boy?
I am really proud that I am a girl. My parents too never showed any difference between me and my brother. They did everything for me, even though that meant a lot of struggle for a middle-class family like ours.

Moreover, I feel that in most cases, it is the girl child who feels more for the parents, and is supportive of them when they are really in need.

All the best, Rachana. God bless you in your future plans and dreams.

A student of Don Bosco High School, Panjim, Andrew John De Sousa always wanted to secure a rank in the Goa Board SSC examination, the results for which were declared recently. And maintaining his consistency, he bagged the first rank in the SSC examination 2018.

Hailing from a family of doctors, Andrew wants to pursue Economics or Law. According to this topper, to secure a good rank one should get one’s basics right in the first place. For Andrew, education is the interplay of intelligence and character besides building a balance between studies and extra-curricular activities.

In the interview below, he talks about his preparation strategies and the importance of developing a proper schedule.

Andrew John De Sousa, 2018 Goa Board SSC topper

Whom do you credit for your achievement?
My sincere gratitude goes out to my parents, sister and family for their constant support. I would also like to thank the teachers of my school, Don Bosco, Panjim, especially my Principal and my Class X teachers, who left no stone unturned to see their students reach the heights of success.

What helped you to achieve this feat?
I would say “quality and quantity” and I believe that consistent study with full concentration, as well as sufficient rest and relaxation are very important. I also revised the portion multiple times and solved model papers which helped me a lot.

Did you expect to top the SSC examination?
Not really. I expected around 95% to be honest, but I am thankful and it is indeed a blessing from God that I stood first in the State.

What message you want to deliver to SSC aspirants?
Work hard consistently and give yourself frequent opportunities to relax your mind. Also a distinction doesn’t necessarily translate itself into Science. Subjects under Arts and Commerce too have viable career prospects.

Which career do you plan to choose?
I am looking towards Economics or Law as an option for future studies having opted for Arts in Class XI and XII.

Your most memorable day at school?
My most memorable day at school was the Annual Day 2016-17 when I was in Class IX. We put in a lot of effort and hard work and it turned out to be a huge success. It was also a learning experience as it was my first time acting in front of such a large audience.

Who is your role model?
No exact role model as such but people striving for peace, justice and unity with a smile on their faces, celebrities or not, are inspiring.
