History graduates work in a wide variety of areas, e.g., business, law, politics, social service and education. Knowledge of history is also an asset in journalism. Newspapers and journals often give assignment to historians for the preparation of background material to enlighten the public on the historical importance of an event. History is a very popular choice for various competitive examinations at state and central level like the civil services. If you continue to study history and go for advanced degree, you will be qualified for jobs in teaching, research or as an archivist.

I consider this my duty as someone who has been associated with THE TEENAGER almost from its baby years, and have known all of the above for years, besides being its Editor for long 17 years before being called to assume this responsibility again, a third time, in June this year.

Fr Maurus Ferrero and Fr Aloysius G. Rego (of happy memory) were not only the Founders of the magazine, but also its first team of Editors. It was Maurus Ferrero (J. Maurus) who originally thought of a magazine that will connect the youth of the country under one umbrella. While he remained the publisher of the magazine, he needed someone who would professionally handle the content and language. A well-known educator and head of the prestigious institution (St Joseph’s High School, Allahabad), besides being an excellent organiser, Aloysius Rego was found to be the best choice.

They managed the magazine very ably in its early years. But as men of wisdom, they thought it important to hand over the batten well on time to someone younger and equally qualified. The choice fell on Mark Fonseca who had just returned to India, after completing his studies in Italy. It was he who introduced me to THE TEENAGER, and guided me through the years.

After nearly four years, Thomas Cheruvil took over as the new editor, and he continued in office for almost 10 years. Thomas Cheruvil brought in many changes to the magazine, both in its content and size, besides making all efforts possible to reach out to more teenagers across the country. May his soul rest in peace!

Among those who succeeded Thomas Cheruvil, who deserve a special mention here are: Abraham Nedumpuram, Sebastian Puthupally, Joe Eruppakkatt, Joby Mathew (presently publisher of the magazine), Joshy Joseph, John Gilbert, and all those who served for shorter terms as Editors, Associate Editors, and long-term contributors. THE TEENAGER TODAY is greatly indebted to all of them, at this special moment of its history.

The deadlines are firm and the field is very stressful. Within the limited time, you need to show creativity and results. It’s a tightrope-walk on an everyday basis.

For a career in advertising, you need to be imaginative, business-oriented and be able to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing along with an outgoing personality. On the other hand, history-related careers require proficiency in reading comprehension, writing and speaking, ability to analyze historical data and conduct research.
