Be it the emoji or the real organ, the heart holds a special place in our culture. World Heart Day (29 September) celebrates the special organ that pumps blood relentlessly, day in and day out, and this is a good time to have a heart-to-heart conversation about the heart!

The Weight of the Heart

The ancient Egyptians thought highly of the heart – so much so that it was the only organ spared during the mummification process. It was considered as the single most important organ – the seat of emotions, wisdom and memory. The heart was also important for the afterlife. Otherwise, what answer can the person give during the judgement of the dead, when God Anubis would weigh the heart against the feather of Ma’at! If the heart was lighter or equal to the feather, the deceased was deemed worthy for the afterlife. If it was heavier, the person faced an oblivion of chaos. Dying with a heavy heart back then was never a good idea.

In the realm of the heart, a tale unfolds,
Of a crush blooming, sweet secrets it holds,
You, my dear one, with caramel brown eyes,
A mesmerizing hue that speaks to the skies.

Curly dark brown hair like tendrils so bold,
A wild dance of strands in stories untold,
From childhood days, we laughed and we played,
Neighbours, friends, in memories we stayed.

In those carefree hours, as innocence thrived,
Our souls intertwined, a friendship revived,
But something more, a feeling deeper grew,
A tender ember that only I knew.

Your caramel brown eyes, a kaleidoscope,
Whispering secrets, where dreams come there hope,
They speak of lands where fantasies come alive,
Reflections of stardust, in love’s eternal dive.

And in your curly dark brown locks I find,
A labyrinth of wonder, a thread that binds,
The memories of days as children at play,
The foundation on which my love will stay.

So here’s my ode, a testament sincere,
To the one who fills my heart with cheer,
My childhood friend, my crush and my guide,
With caramel brown eyes where love resides.

Heart https://theteenagertoday.com/heart/ Tue, 20 Feb 2024 08:39:00 +0000 https://theteenagertoday.com/?p=29554 For once in life,
Unleash your heart
And let it take the lead.
Let it twirl you around fearlessly
And sweep you off your feet.

For once in life,
Unleash your heart
And let it take the lead.
Let it twirl you around fearlessly
And sweep you off your feet.
Listen, as it whispers the song
That made it skip to a beat.
It knows no right.
It knows no wrong.
Just loves, hurts, forgives and repeats.

You’d find an empty space,
From the world she gave her heart to,
That didn’t put its own in that place.

If you peered in through her rib cage,
You’d find an empty space,
From the world she gave her heart to,
That didn’t put its own in that place.
She no longer is the owner
Of the blood within her veins,
It belongs to all the memories,
And the drugs to numb the pain.
The brain within her skull,
Is so flooded it could drown
In the names of people who said they cared,
But didn’t stick around.
All the words that she’s been called,
Have replaced all of her bones,
Even the smile upon her lips is no longer her own.
There’s nothing left of her body,
That society hasn’t touched,
Yet they have the nerve to wonder why,
She hates herself so much.

A heart that beats with newfound grace,
A blush upon a young, fresh face,
A glimmer in the eyes that shine,
As love unfolds in sweetest time.

The teenage heart, so pure and bold,
A fire that burns, a tale untold,
A rush of feelings, fierce and true,
That stir the soul and make it new.

A glance, a smile, a gentle touch,
A fleeting moment that means so much,
The world around them fades away,
As two young hearts begin to sway.

A first kiss shared in secret bliss,
A moment captured, a memory missed,
A love that blossoms, pure and bright,
In the hearts of two who see the light.

Oh, teenage love, a sweet refrain,
A love that knows no bounds or pain,
A love that blooms and takes flight,
And fills the world with sweet delight.

Flames in the shape of the heart

A few years ago I was asked if I’d teach the art of public speaking to some people from an economically poor background. That day, I looked at a motley set of people and as I began to speak my heart sank; they looked anything but people who would one day get up and wax eloquent.

There was a shy schoolgirl who couldn’t even look directly at me, a housewife who nodded to everything I said but who I found out later didn’t know English well, a man who had a nervous twitch that began twitching as if to distract me, and others who looked equally incapable of such huge task.

“There is a word which starts with the letter ‘P’ which is the most important word in learning to speak in public,” I said, “What is it?”

“Persistence,” whispered the shy girl.

“You’re partially right,” I said kindly, “but that’s not the word I’m looking for just now!”

“Preparation,” said the twitching lip man.

“Again, very close, but not close enough!”

“Passion!” said the woman who could hardly speak English and I nearly hugged her.

Oblivion https://theteenagertoday.com/oblivion/ Wed, 20 Oct 2021 06:46:11 +0000 https://theteenagertoday.com/?p=20562 Don’t be afraid of the oblivion.
The voices you hear are merely echoes of your own footsteps.

Don’t be afraid of the oblivion.
The voices you hear are merely echoes of your own footsteps.
The shadows you see are yours, too.
It contains no adventure.
Don’t stare into the oblivion.
It is not as bewitching as you presume.
It contains no mystery, no fable, no secret.
If you do look for adventure,
I’d say look deeper into your heart.
If you do look for secrets, mysteries, fables,
I’d say look deeper into my heart.

The heart is another soul found inside you;
Your heart is full of colour, this is true.
The colour of joy;
The colour of love.
Inspires you to enjoy;
Sometimes it is tough.
Tough to control feelings;
Feelings beyond this earth.
The peaceful heart improves birds’ singing
The creative heart makes us inhale the fragrance of the earth.
This is always true;
Your heart is in you.
Waiting for the moment
When you smile.

When eyes see beauty,
And ears hear laughter,
When the senses awaken to the day’s fragrances,
When mouths speak only kind and guiding words.
When arms embrace,
When hands help,
When fingers no longer point,
When legs march only for peace,
When feet dance in joy,
When minds unite to create good,
And there is respect for all,
Then the heart and soul will sing with love.

Roses and myrtles are what I like,
On warm days and chilly nights
Each hour, every while
Counting stars and passing lights.
Want what I want
But can’t or might.

If wanting that is a sin,
Then why am I livin’?
I wish I could confess,
My feelings are a mess.

I wish you would run into me,
Make my demons go silly.
Set my castle ablaze,
Make an escape to a place;
A place on fire,
A garden of complete desire.
But the flowers could not fulfill,
My heart’s will.
