I am studying in class XI and have taken PCM with Computer Science as an optional subject. And I am finding it a little difficult to manage with computers. If I want to do software engineering in the future, is it necessary to take Computer Science in 10+2? And if not, can I take Physical Education as an optional subject?

Eligibility wise, it is not necessary to take computer science in 10+2 in order to do software (computer) engineering. But a course in computer engineering does require study of computer science. If you are not able to handle it now, how will you be able to study that for next four years? Just think…

I am in Std X. I am really interested in computers and programming. I want to know more about career options in this field. What’s the difference between a BCA and B.Tech. computer science? Which are the colleges or universities for this line?

Although BCA and B.Tech. are graduate programmes, both are entirely different streams of study. Bachelor of Computer Application is concerned with software designing, data base management and operational functions with the help of multifaceted data within a computer. However, B.Tech. is a professional degree course which incorporates technical subjects along with computer applications. The duration of the BCA course is three years whereas the duration of the B.Tech. course is four years.

B.Tech. has reasonably good employment opportunities. But after having a BCA, aspirants can only expect entry-level jobs in the IT sector. Most of them pursue the 2 years MCA program after their BCA. So it takes total 5 years while B.Tech. takes only 4 years.

All good institutes like IITs and NITs offer B.Tech. in Computer Science. BCA is also offered by many universities and institutes all over India.

B.Sc. (Computer Science) and BCA (Bachelors in Computer Applications) both focus on the mathematical and theoretical foundations of computing. Both are degree courses of 3 years’ duration.

B.Sc. (Computer Science) is a simple academic course for which eligibility is 10+2 with PCM. It mainly deals with soft computing and placing of mathematical and theoretical concepts, programming language, algorithms, Computer Architecture and Organization. You will also learn about hardware components and other areas like Database Management Systems, C Programming, Computer Fundamentals, UNIX and Java Programming, etc. After completing the course you can go for M.Sc. or MCA. You may also get a job as software developer in various IT companies.

Eligibility for BCA is 10+2 with Mathematics as a compulsory subject. During BCA, you’ll learn about operating system, DBMS, Digitals, electronics and many more areas of networking and IT systems. This is more of a professional course where one also learns about management of business and accountancy. After completing BCA, you can go for masters like MCA or work in various corporate companies as software testers or software developers.
